Dear Parent/Carer

Great progress

During the first two weeks of term, children in Key Stage Two have taken a series of tests to help us measure their progress since September.  We were particularly keen to see how well children were progressing in Years Four and Five, where we have taken the bold step of vertically streaming the classes.

We are delighted to say that the results of these tests have been overwhelmingly positive in all year groups.  Very good rates of progress were recorded among children in Poplar class (Year Three), particularly in writing and maths.

Children in Beech class have made excellent progress; the children clearly benefitting from the Sound Discovery programme in their performances in reading and writing tests. The reading and spelling ages of these children have also risen significantly; their reading ages, for instance, have risen by an average of one year per child during the four months since September.  The majority of children in both Years Four and Five achieved a higher level than in September in reading, writing and maths.

Meanwhile, Oak class (Year Six), is on course to produce the best set of Key Stage Two SATS results achieved by the school for several years.

Overall, these results show your children have made great progress during the first part of the year. It is particularly heartening to see that splitting Years Four and Five into two new classes has had such a positive effect on those children’s learning.  (The results exclude children who were absent for part of the period and have still to take the tests. These children will take the tests as soon as is possible on their return).

Bad weather arrangements – can you help us?

Snow disrupted school for several days both before and after Christmas and we were reluctantly forced to close for three days. Having reviewed our arrangements, we feel we could make the school site safer for your children more quickly if we had assistance with clearing snow from pathways and other areas around the school. We would like to set up a team of parents/carers who would be prepared to come in and help us clear the site in the event of snow.  Volunteers will be rewarded with warm refreshments and our eternal gratitude!  If you would be willing to help, please contact the school office.
